We are an Indigenous-led nonprofit that aims to nurture an interconnected urban Indigenous community within the Sea-to-Sky corridor, where we honour our ancestors, celebrate our diverse cultures, and sustain the seeds of knowledge for the next seven generations.

OUR STORY

manoomin collective was founded in June 2024 on the traditional territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw in what is now known as Squamish, BC. The idea to form the organization was created as a way to address the lack of access to cultural programming in the Sea-to-Sky corridor for urban Indigenous Peoples.

While our story is just beginning, our intention is to build an organization for the Indigenous community that will be here for the generations to come. We are here to honour our ancestors, to uplift our communities, and to celebrate our diversity.

We are here for the past, the present, and the future generations.

Born from lived experience, and a desire to connect deeply with community and culture.

OUR NAME

Manoomin is the Anishinaabemowin word for wild rice and is referred to as the seed of life and the good seed. Manoomin provides sustenance for the community and has the ability to reseed itself and to grow continuously.

When manoomin is ripe, the grains fall into the water, lodging into the mud for future stands of rice to grow.

Like the seeds of wild rice that fall from their stalks and are embedded into the earth, manoomin collective embodies the essence of nurturing the deep-rooted traditions and wisdom of our ancestors.

This commitment to reseeding serves as a bridge between the past, present, and the future, ensuring that the teachings and practices that have sustained our communities for generations are not only practiced and honoured, but passed onto the future generations.
